- Eating Dumplings (北方吃饺子): In northern China, people eat mutton and vegetable dumplings to commemorate medical sage Zhang仲景 and protect their ears from frostbite.
- Eating Tangyuan (南方吃汤圆): In southern provinces, families eat sweet glutinous rice balls (Tangyuan), symbolizing family reunion and the addition of a new year of age.

A unique intellectual pastime during Dongzhi is “Counting the Nine Nines” (数九消寒). People draw a traditional plum blossom outline with 81 white petals. Starting from Dongzhi, they color in one petal each day; by the time all 81 petals are filled, the bitter winter cold has passed and spring has returned.
