1. Climate & Natural Phenomena
Lixia (Start of Summer) is the 7th solar term, occurring around May 5 to 6. It signals the official transition from spring into summer. As sunlight intensifies and summer monsoons begin to form, crops enter their most robust phase of vegetative growth.
Ancient Chinese phenology divided Start of Summer into three distinctive micro-seasons (Penthads / 三候):
蝼蝈鸣 Mole crickets and green tree frogs begin to sing warmly in the fields.
蚯蚓出 Earthworms emerge from the warming, moist soil to loosen the earth.
王瓜生 Wild climbing gourds and cucumber vines rapidly climb and spread their leaves.
2. Lifestyle, Diet & Customs
In traditional Chinese culture, summer corresponds to the Heart organ. Seasonal lifestyle practices emphasize calmness, good sleep, and invigorating diets.
🍵 Diet & Health
Dietary customs during Lixia focus on preventing summer fatigue and improving appetite with colorful seasonal ingredients:
- Lixia Rice (立夏饭): Steamed glutinous rice cooked with five colorful ingredients—such as broad beans, soybeans, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, and salted pork—symbolizing the Five Elements and good health.
- Eating Broad Beans & Plums: Fresh broad beans provide energy, while sour plums help retain body fluids and quench thirst.
- Lixia Eggs (立夏蛋): Boiled eggs brewed with tea leaves and spices are eaten to strengthen the body against summer weakness.
🏮 Folk Traditions
One of the most charming folk customs is “Weighing People” (立夏称人). Villagers suspend a large wooden scale from a strong tree branch and weigh children and adults alike. People exchange auspicious wishes while being weighed, believing the ritual brings protection from summer illness and heatstroke.
📜 Classic Poetry
Poets celebrated Lixia for its transition from delicate spring flowers to deep green summer shade:
《幽居初夏》 — 陆游 (Song Dynasty)
湖山胜处放翁家,槐柳阴初月细遮。
闲看燕子教雏飞,一雨收残暑气华。
(By the tranquil lake stands my humble home, where young locust and willow shade softly veil the crescent moon. Leaning back, I watch swallows teaching their fledglings to fly, as a refreshing rain clears the air and ushers in summer’s splendor.)
3. Agricultural Wisdom
In rural farming communities, an old proverb states: “Lixia brings three days of warmth; plants shoot up and fill the earth (立夏三天草,找不到旧踪影).”
This term marks the start of the summer crop management season. Farmers carefully monitor irrigation levels, remove invasive field weeds, and prepare for the upcoming grain harvest.
