24 Solar Terms Lunar Mar

Qingming (Pure Brightness) [ 清明 ]

The 5th solar term, serving uniquely as both an astronomical node and an ancestral festival, celebrated by tomb-sweeping and spring excursions.

1. Climate & Natural Phenomena

Qingming (Pure Brightness) is the 5th solar term, occurring around April 4 to 6. It is one of the few solar terms that also functions as a traditional national holiday. As the name indicates, the air becomes crisp and clean, temperatures rise comfortably, and the landscape turns lush and green.

Ancient Chinese phenology divided Pure Brightness into three distinctive micro-seasons (Penthads / 三候):

🌸 1st Penthad
桐始华
Paulownia trees burst into striking white and purple blossoms.
🐭 2nd Penthad
田鼠化为鴽
Field mice retreat into underground burrows as migratory quails appear in grasslands.
🌈 3rd Penthad
虹始见
Rainbows frequently appear after light springtime sunshowers.

2. Lifestyle, Diet & Customs

Qingming is a poignant blend of solemn remembrance and joyful outdoor recreation, honoring roots while welcoming new life.

🍵 Diet & Health

The most iconic seasonal food for Qingming is Qingtuan (青团) / Sweet Green Rice Balls:

  1. Qingtuan: Sticky rice flour mixed with mugwort or barley grass juice, stuffed with sweet red bean paste or salted egg yolk.
  2. Cold Food Traditions: Honoring the ancient Hanshi (Cold Food) Festival heritage by eating prepared cold pastries and spring vegetables.
  3. Pre-Qingming Tea (明前茶): Green tea harvested right before Qingming is prized for its exceptional aroma and tenderness.

🏮 Folk Traditions

While Tomb Sweeping (扫墓) is the primary duty—where families clean ancestral graves and offer fresh flowers—Qingming is equally celebrated with Ta Qing (踏青 - Spring Outings). People go hiking, enjoy picnics, and fly colorful kites in the open meadows.

📜 Classic Poetry

No poem in Chinese history is more closely tied to a solar term than Du Mu’s melancholic masterpiece:

《清明》 — 杜牧 (Tang Dynasty)
清明时节雨纷纷,路上行人欲断魂。
借问酒家何处有?牧童遥指杏花村。
(A drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day; the traveler’s heart is breaking on the highway. “Where can a tavern be found?” I ask. A herd boy points afar to Apricot Blossom Village.)

3. Agricultural Wisdom

In rural farming communities, an old proverb states: “Plant melons and beans around Qingming (清明前后,种瓜点豆).”

This is the golden period for spring cultivation. As frost danger entirely vanishes, farmers sow corn, cotton, and vegetables, while ensuring proper irrigation for growing fruit orchards.
