Ancient Chinese phenology divided Frost’s Descent into three distinctive micro-seasons (Penthads / 三候):
豺乃祭兽 Jackals and wild beasts hunt vigorously, displaying prey as a winter sacrifice.
草木黄落 Tree leaves turn completely golden and wither, falling heavily in the autumn wind.
蛰虫咸俯 Insects stop moving and hide deep inside their burrows, entering full hibernation.

- Eating Persimmons (吃柿子): Persimmons ripen to peak sweetness during Shuangjiang. Eating them is believed to strengthen the lips and limbs against frostbite.
- Chestnuts & Beef Stew: Rich, warming dishes that fortify stomach and spleen energy.
- White Radish Soup: Helping to clear internal heat caused by wearing heavier winter clothing.

In traditional military and historical culture across China, Shuangjiang was marked by “Inspecting Weapons and Banners” (阅兵祭旗). Because autumn represents martial justice and discipline in ancient philosophy, garrison troops would drill and inspect armaments to prepare for border defense during the long winter months.

This is the ultimate cleanup stage of autumn. Farmers rapidly dig up sweet potatoes, carrots, and peanuts before the freezing frost damages root crops, storing them safely in subterranean root cellars.
