1. Core Concept (核心概念)
Wu Xing (五行), commonly translated as the “Five Elements” or “Five Phases,” is a foundational framework in Chinese philosophy describing five fundamental forces that constitute and transform all matter and energy in the universe.
Unlike the static Greek elements (earth, water, air, fire), the Five Elements are dynamic and interactive—constantly generating, overcoming, and transforming one another.
| Element | Chinese | Nature | Season | Direction | Color |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | 木 (Mù) | Growing, expanding | Spring | East | Green |
| Fire | 火 (Huǒ) | Rising, radiating | Summer | South | Red |
| Earth | 土 (Tǔ) | Nurturing, stabilizing | Late Summer | Center | Yellow |
| Metal | 金 (Jīn) | Condensing, contracting | Autumn | West | White |
| Water | 水 (Shuǐ) | Descending, flowing | Winter | North | Black |
2. The Two Cycles of Interaction (相生相克)
The Five Elements interact through two primary cycles:
Generation Cycle (相生 - Xiāng Shēng)
> “Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water nourishes Wood.”
This cycle represents creation and support—each element strengthens the next.
Overcoming Cycle (相克 - Xiāng Kè)
> “Wood parts Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood.”
This cycle represents control and restraint—preventing any single element from dominating.
3. Applications (应用领域)
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (中医)
Each element corresponds to internal organs and bodily functions:
- Wood → Liver & Gallbladder (growth, planning, vision)
- Fire → Heart & Small Intestine (joy, circulation, consciousness)
- Earth → Spleen & Stomach (digestion, nourishment, stability)
- Metal → Lungs & Large Intestine (breath, immunity, release)
- Water → Kidneys & Bladder (vitality, reproduction, fear)
A TCM diagnosis often begins by identifying which element is in excess or deficiency, then prescribing herbs, acupuncture, or dietary adjustments to restore balance.
In Feng Shui (风水)
The Five Elements guide spatial design and object placement:
- A Fire element (red colors, triangular shapes) in the south sector enhances fame and reputation.
- A Water element (aquariums, wavy shapes) in the north sector supports career advancement.
In Festivals & Daily Life (在节日与生活中的体现)
- Red (Fire) dominates the Spring Festival to activate Yang energy and drive away winter’s Yin cold.
- Green (Wood) is worn during Qingming Festival, symbolizing spring’s generative force and ancestor renewal.
- The Five-Color Silk Threads (五彩丝) tied to children’s wrists during the Dragon Boat Festival directly invoke all five elements for holistic protection.
- Mooncakes at Mid-Autumn are round (Earth shape) to represent reunion and stability, while their fillings often combine flavors aligned with elemental balance.
