24 Solar Terms Lunar Oct

Xiaoxue (Minor Snow) [ 小雪 ]

The 20th solar term, when temperatures drop below freezing in northern China, bringing light snowfalls and customs of preserving cured meats.

1. Climate & Natural Phenomena

Xiaoxue (Minor Snow) is the 20th solar term, occurring around November 22 to 23. As temperatures plunge below freezing, northern precipitation changes from rain to snow. However, because the ground is not yet deeply frozen, the snow is usually light and melts quickly—hence the name “Minor Snow.”

Ancient Chinese phenology divided Minor Snow into three distinctive micro-seasons (Penthads / 三候):

🌈 1st Penthad
虹藏不见
Rainbows completely vanish from the winter skies as moisture freezes.
☁️ 2nd Penthad
天气上升地气下降
Heavenly energy ascends and earthly energy descends, separating the elements.
🧊 3rd Penthad
闭塞而成冬
All creation locks its vital energy away, sealing the landscape into deep winter.

2. Lifestyle, Diet & Customs

With sub-zero temperatures arriving, households utilize the cold, dry air of Minor Snow to prepare preserved foods for the winter and upcoming Lunar New Year.

🍵 Diet & Health

Health regimens during Minor Snow focus on warming the body, preventing seasonal depression from lack of sunlight, and eating fermented or cured dishes:

  1. Making Cured Meats (腌腊肉): Households salt and air-dry pork belly, sausages, and fish under cold winter sunshine and breezes.
  2. Eating Glutinous Rice Cakes (吃糍粑): In southern provinces, freshly pounded sticky rice cakes are shared among neighbors as a celebration of winter storage.
  3. Spinach Soup: Fresh winter spinach helps balance rich meat diets and provides essential iron and vitamins.

🏮 Folk Traditions

In areas like Taiwan and southern Fujian, Minor Snow marks the traditional season for “Making Sun-Dried Fish and Noodles” (晒鱼干与面线). Fishermen take advantage of the dry seasonal winds to preserve surplus fish catches without using artificial refrigeration.

📜 Classic Poetry

Poets found cozy comfort in wine and warm indoor gatherings as snow began to drift outside:

《夜雪》 — 白居易 (Tang Dynasty)
已讶衾枕冷,复见窗户明.
夜深知雪重,时闻折竹声.
(Surprised already by the cold quilt and pillows, I see the window glowing bright. Deep in the night I know the snow is heavy, as from time to time I hear bamboo branches snap beneath its weight.)

3. Agricultural Wisdom

In rural farming communities, an old proverb states: “Minor Snow brings snow to wheat fields; an auspicious sign for a bumper harvest next year (小雪雪满天,来岁大丰年).”

A blanket of snow acts as a natural thermal quilt for winter wheat, insulating roots against freezing winds and providing vital spring moisture when it melts.
